Artist Statement
My work tends to come from an attraction to material. I am drawn to each material or object for its details, its unique qualities, or its simple ordinariness. I allow a free association of sorts to occur. The material, unfolding itself to me through observation and study, decides the process that follows. This is often a sort of play, manifesting in a tactile investigation of the material and an inquiry into its original purpose. These are all elements that are taken into account when thinking of the end product, which often times changes during the creative process and sometimes after. This can happen in a flash or it can take months, even years to finally reveal itself. I learn to become patient. My work grows from a balance between the final piece and the original characteristics of the material. As I work with each material I organize them in a way that will enhance the qualities that drew me to them in the first place. When bringing these specific materials together, these singular identities brought together as a system of contacts and supports, I am able to create a beauty of my own. The work can then be seen as a whole and the individual material is a part of that whole and although there is often the question of “what is it?”, the viewer accepts the possibility of never knowing the original materials purpose, because of the whole it
